FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

I have tried to think of the questions that I needed answered when I started losing my hair. I know that this is not easy; however, knowledge is power and gives you the ability to make sound decisions for your life. I know that everyone is an individual and you might react a little differently to the chemotherapy, but over the years I have found the answers below are pretty good guidelines.

What is the difference between your wigs and others?
We offer the highest quality wigs with the best fibers available along with trendsetting colors and styles .What really SETS US APART is the customizing of your wig which can include Patti’s Signature Hairline or MySizing for many wigs. You will be amazed at how natural and real your wig will look and feel.

Which should I choose: synthetic or human hair?
When choosing a wig, consider first the length of time you will actually need a your wig. Your hair will begin to grow back very soon after your treatment is completed. Some patients experience re-growth even before completing their chemotherapy. You need to plan on wearing your wig for a year to a year and a half. You may have some hair at this time, but this gives you time to regrow all of your hair and show off your new hair with confidence. As your hair grows back, you can release the darts sewn inside the wig cap, so your wig grows with your hair. Synthetic wigs offer great value through price, easy daily maintenance, durability and appearance. Synthetic wigs come with fiber memory, built-in wave or curl pattern that holds its style unless the wig is abused (with excess heat or combing while the wig is wet.) A properly maintained synthetic wig will look and wear well for the time you will need it. Synthetic wigs are made with small, light wefts that look like natural hair (see wig construction), and they are much easier to style than real hair. You will be spoiled by the ease! Some synthetic wigs are made with a monofilament (transparent) top that looks exactly like your scalp with individual hair that appears to be growing out of the scalp. The 100% hand-tied wigs look very natural. Always follow the wig maker’s instructions, and use only products made for synthetic hair. Human hair wigs are more expensive than synthetic wigs and have to be shampooed, dried, styled and conditioned just like your natural hair. They may frizz on humid days and lose their style if they get wet. Human hair wigs may be permed and colored but be sure to have a qualified stylist perform these services, as wig hair is extremely porous and easily damaged by chemical services.

How do I know what size to get?
Average wigs fit heads from 21.5" to 23" in circumference.  Ninety-five percent of our customers fall into this range. For instructions on how to measure your head size go to "new to wigs?” on our home page. Your wig should be worn on your natural hairline, approximately four fingers above the eyebrows. The back of the wig should be pulled down to the natural hairline in the back. Wigs have adjustable Velcro and elastic tabs in the back so you can adjust your wig for a secure, comfortable fit. There are also small tabs in the front of the ears that can be adjusted to hold the wig close to the face. Remember, our sewn-in adjustments can be released so your wig can grow with your hair regrowth.

How do I know what color to choose?
Most women like to choose a color that best matches their hair color when they started treatment. But some brave souls like to experiment with other colors, styles, or lengths. If you want to match your hair, you may want to purchase a color ring that is available on our home page. You may also want to send us a snip of your hair or send us a photo. These decisions can be made at the time of purchase. Please remember that monitor settings can distort colors, so pay attention to the name of the color. The names are very descriptive. Also, you can enlarge the color on the wig page to see the subtleties of each color.

Can I cut my wig?
Yes, however if you are considering cutting or thinning your wig, we highly recommend you take your wig to a hair stylist who is experienced in cutting wigs. (it won’t grow back :))

Can I color my wig?
We do not recommend coloring your wig with dyes or bleach. This may damage the fibers of the hair.

How do I care for my wig?
The original style of your synthetic wig can be preserved if you wash and take care of it properly. Be sure to keep your wig away from heat and steam (such as: opening oven and dishwasher doors while in front of them, spas, heated curling irons and rollers, etc.) Following are a few suggestions for you:

SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER

It is imperative that your synthetic wig be cared for with the proper products. Human hair (which is protein) has cuticle while synthetic fiber has a surface. To clean and condition a synthetic fiber must be a two step process. The first step is to clean; the second step is to apply a protective adherent we call Wig Conditioner. Your wig should be washed approximately every 21 days of wearing. You may wait longer if you are not wearing it every day all day long.

1. CLEANING. Place your wig in a ceramic bowl or shallow sink of cool water containing enough of the Jon Renau Wig Shampoo to produce a low level of suds. ( One capful for a short or medium length wig to 1 ½ to 2 capfuls for a long wig.) NOTE: NEVER USE HOT WATER. If you do, you will loosen the curl or frizz the synthetic fibers. Gently swish the wig and let soak for five to ten minutes. Rinse thoroughly in cool clean water. Lay the wig on a towel and gently blot. ** The tub faucet has enough force to rinse the wig properly - most kitchen sprayers or faucets do not. However, try to use the kitchen sprayer first as it is easier and you do not have to bend over the tub.

2. CONDITIONING. Once the wig is thoroughly rinsed with cold water, hold the nape (back base) of the wig and shake a couple of times. The shaking separates the fibers and allows you to spray the Jon Renau Conditioner into the base of the fiber. Spray evenly and lightly throughout the wig. Ten to fifteen sprays into the wig should be plenty. Gently squeeze out excess but DO NOT RINSE!! Towel blot your wig. DO NOT PUT YOUR WIG ON A STYRO HEAD TO DRY! The wig will have a tendency to stretch when wet. Lay your wig on a towel with hair side up and let dry. If your wig has a tousled or curly look, shake out wig and then lay upon a towel to dry. Turn wig over when the fiber is dry to complete during the inside. If you place the wig outside in the sunshine, it should dry in less than an hour. If you place your wig inside, you can count on overnight to dry.   In humid conditions or when time is of the essence, place wig on a towel in front of a cool fan. Drying time depends on length and thickness of your wig.  After your wig has dried, shake it out gently and proceed to style with your with brush and/or fingers.  Put your wig on, touch it up a little, and go!
