Learn How to Measure Your Head for a Wig

Although 90 percent of people wear the size “average,” the secret to finding the perfect wig that fits securely for maximum comfort and confidence involves finding your correct wig size. Not to mention, by measuring your head for the correct wig size, you’ll have the perfect fit for the most natural look possible. Not sure how to measure your head for a wig? It’s really quite simple. You’ll need to take three different measurements to find your wig size-- circumference, front to back, and ear to ear.

How to Measure Head Size

To measure your head for your wig size, you’ll need to flatten your hair as smoothly as possible against your scalp. You’ll need a cloth tape measure or string for accurate measurements. Keep a paper and pencil handy to write down your measurements.

How to Measure Wig Circumference

To measure the circumference of your head, start at the front of your natural hairline. Then, follow your hairline to your ear, around to the back bend of your neck, up your hairline to your second ear, and connect to your starting point in the front. The wig sizes for circumference are as follows: Mini Petite (MP) 20 ¾ inches, Petite (P) 21 inches, Average (A) 21 ½ inches, and Large (L) 23 inches.

How to Measure Front to Back

You’ll need to measure your head from front to back as well to find your wig size. Start at  your hairline above your forehead in the center, then run the tape measure straight back over the crown to the base of your hairline at the bend of your neck. The wig sizes for this measurement includes: Mini Petite (MP) 12 ¾ inches, Petite (P) 13 ¼ inches, Average (A) 14 ¼ inches, and Large (L) 15 ¼ inches.

How to Measure from Ear to Ear

The final measurement you’ll need to take is from ear to ear. With this measurement, you’ll start at the top of one ear where your hairline begins, run the tape measure over your crown to the top of your second ear where your hairline begins. For this measurement, the sizes are as follows: Mini Petite (MP) 12 ¾ inches, Petite (P) 13 inches, Average (A) 13 ½ inches, and Large (L) 14 inches.

It’s not uncommon to find measurements aren’t exact when you measure your head. Should you find that your measurements are in between sizes, you’ll want to choose the size that corresponds to the largest measurement as the caps of wigs are often adjustable up to 1 inch to ensure a secure fit.

Should you have difficulty figuring out how to measure your head size, seek a consultation with a wig professional to ensure you’re using the right size prior to purchasing a wig.
